Fund probe reaches former SPK chief as ministry opens review
Istanbul prosecutors have asked the Treasury and Finance Ministry for permission to investigate former Capital Markets Board (SPK) Chairman İbrahim Ömer Gönül for alleged abuse of office. The request is tied to four investigations examining suspected manipulation through portfolio management companies and investment funds. Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek has separately tasked the ministry's Inspection Board with a preliminary examination and review.
The investigation is now examining the regulator's own oversight record. The SPK says 131 funds from seven portfolio managers are being liquidated, affecting 455,758 unique investors.

The meeting follows the committee's first session in Istanbul on August 31 and further ministerial and military contacts in September.

GSI survey plan moves toward October 26 notification test
Athens and Paris are close to a formula for renewed Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) seabed surveys, with French cable maker Nexans expected to notify Ankara before work in international waters east of Kasos and Karpathos around October 26. The planned sequence is precise: Nexans would notify Ankara while seeking the authorization required from Athens under its contract. Athens and Paris maintain that notification is not a request for Türkiye's permission.
The same question sits at the center of the notification dispute surrounding the cable project. Ta Nea cited Bosphorus News Chief Editor Murat Yıldız's reporting from senior Turkish military sources that Ankara expects a written exchange involving the relevant states, not only a technical company notice. Those sources said Ankara wants the written record to prevent the survey from later being portrayed as recognition of Greek continental-shelf claims or as a new fait accompli.

He also said the US Senate was showing interest in extending the current annual International Traffic in Arms Regulations arrangement for the Republic of Cyprus to three or five years. His remarks describe the relationship; Washington has not announced a new treaty guarantee.
