Filo Jet Toll Stands at 12 as Inquiry Moves Into Ship's Technical History
The confirmed death toll from the Filo Jet disaster stood at 12, with 16 people still missing and 239 of the 267 passengers and crew rescued.
TCG Işın and TCG Alemdar remain off northern Cyprus, where remotely operated vehicles are working around and inside the wreck at a depth of about 550 metres. The vessel's voyage data recorder has not been recovered.
Police have requested reports, certificates and other files from Türk Loydu, and maintenance and repair work carried out at Ceyhan on April 30 has entered the inquiry. An accident investigation team from Türkiye is also examining possible structural damage.
The administrative fallout widened on Sept. 5. Public Works and Transport Ministry Undersecretary Enver Öztürk, Ministry Director Mustafa Ambar and Ports Department Director Emsal Emirzadeoğulları were removed from office. Murat Saler was appointed undersecretary effective the same day.
The changes follow the removal of former minister Erhan Arıklı and the withdrawal of the Yeniden Doğuş Partisi from the governing coalition. Prime Minister Ünal Üstel's government and the main opposition Republican Turkish Party have also sought a parliamentary investigation. The remaining governing parties hold 25 of the 49 occupied seats ahead of the planned Dec. 6 election, leaving parliamentary handling of the inquiry dependent on support from outside the coalition.
The released Filo Jet licensing documents establish a valid Turkish Cypriot endorsement for the master's Honduran certificate while leaving the separate high-speed craft type-rating question unresolved.
Turkish Navy Locates Tuğberk İmamoğlu Wreck, 10 Crew Still Missing
The Turkish Navy rescue and towing vessel TCG Akın has located the wreck of Tuğberk İmamoğlu, the Turkish-flagged cargo ship that sank after colliding with tanker ALSU south of Istanbul's Silivri coast on Sept. 2.
The collision and search area is around 900 metres deep, substantially deeper than the Filo Jet wreck site off northern Cyprus. The Marmara trench in the area reaches roughly 800 to 1,200 metres, but the Defense Ministry has not published an exact depth for the wreck itself.
Search operations continue for all 10 missing crew members. The ship had been carrying rolled steel from İskenderun to Karadeniz Ereğli when it sank shortly after the collision.
Two ALSU captains have been remanded in custody. Locating the wreck gives search teams and investigators a fixed underwater site, but no final determination of responsibility has been made.
Republic of Cyprus Expands Security Work With Greece and Israel
Republic of Cyprus Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas said the Greece-Israel Achilles Shield air-defense project also strengthens the Republic of Cyprus, describing Türkiye as a common threat faced by the three countries.
The Greece-Israel agreement remains bilateral. Palmas' remarks nevertheless placed the Republic of Cyprus inside the security argument surrounding the project four days after the signatories themselves left Türkiye unnamed.
The same week, a delegation from Israel's National Emergency Management Authority met the Republic's Defence and Interior ministries, National Guard, Foreign Ministry Crisis Centre, Civil Defence and Joint Rescue Coordination Centre. The visit included discussions on advancing a memorandum of understanding and a related Work Plan on civil protection, emergency management and crisis preparedness.
A separate Republic of Cyprus-Greece search-and-rescue exercise, SALAMIS-03/26, brought Greek frigates Hydra and Nikiforos Fokas together with Republic of Cyprus naval, air and police assets on Sept. 2.
Palmas' description of Türkiye as a "common threat" came during a week that also brought the Israeli emergency-management visit and the joint Cyprus-Greece exercise.
Costa Brings EU-Türkiye Relations Into Cyprus Settlement Discussion
European Council President António Costa said during his visit to the Republic of Cyprus that the European Union could contribute positively to a settlement, including through stronger EU-Türkiye relations.
Costa's written statement reaffirmed EU backing for the UN-led process and the role of EU Special Representative Raffaele Fitto. Republic of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides also called for a new enlarged conference that could formally resume negotiations from where they previously stopped.
Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot President Tufan Erhürman are due to meet on Sept. 9.
UN Personal Envoy María Angela Holguín is expected back on the island after the first ten days of September following consultations with Secretary-General António Guterres in New York.

Greece Says Maritime Delimitation Talks With Türkiye Cannot Begin
Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said negotiations with Türkiye on the continental shelf and exclusive economic zone cannot begin because the two sides have not agreed that maritime delimitation is the only bilateral dispute to be referred to talks.
That leaves the formal maritime track blocked even as lower-level channels continue.
The dispute over the scope of the Greece-Türkiye maritime talks is straightforward: Athens wants continental shelf and exclusive economic zone delimitation treated as the sole dispute, while Türkiye maintains a wider set of outstanding Aegean issues.
The Great Sea Interconnector remains a separate operational file. Greece says it does not require Türkiye's permission for survey work, but no new NAVTEX or officially confirmed replacement survey vessel has established a restart date.
Türkiye Reportedly Files Protest Over Evros Border Fence
Türkiye has lodged a formal diplomatic protest over sections of Greece's expanding border fence along the Evros River, arguing that parts of the construction extend onto territory it considers Turkish, Kathimerini reported.
The dispute centres on differences between border surveys dating to 1926 and newer digital mapping. Greek military maps place the affected areas inside Greece, while technical services from the two countries have not agreed on common mapping for the disputed points.
Construction is continuing.
Türkiye's Foreign Ministry had not published a corresponding statement by Saturday afternoon, so the protest remains attributed to Greek reporting.
Syria
Mazloum Abdi Says Relations With Türkiye Should Improve
Mazloum Abdi, the former commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and now an adviser to Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, said relations with Türkiye should move toward a more normal footing and that channels with Ankara remain open.
In an interview released Sept. 4, Abdi said meeting imprisoned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) founder Abdullah Öcalan would be useful and argued that Türkiye's domestic peace process could also improve relations with Syrian Kurds.
The remarks follow the dissolution and integration process that transferred the former SDF command structure into Syrian state institutions.
Separate reports that Türkiye has removed Abdi from its wanted list remain without official Turkish confirmation and are not being treated as established fact.

Türkiye Rebukes European Parliament Committee Over Cyprus Memorial Proposal
Türkiye's Foreign Ministry has objected to a recommendation concerning a Cyprus memorial in an opinion prepared by the European Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality for the EU's 2027 budget.
The ministry said on Sept. 3 that the committee opinion recommends allocating funds for a memorial planned by the Republic of Cyprus concerning allegations against Turkish forces during the events of 1974. Ankara said the project would defame the Turkish Armed Forces and accused EU institutions of undermining trust between the two communities by adopting the Greek Cypriot account of the period.
The recommendation is part of a European Parliament committee opinion in the continuing 2027 budget process. It is not a final EU budget allocation.
The Turkish statement also linked the dispute directly to the wider EU relationship, calling on EU officials not to support steps that, in Ankara's view, push Türkiye further away from the bloc.
Barrack Says Golden Global Sanction Does Not Target Turkish Banking System
US Ambassador to Türkiye Tom Barrack sought on Saturday to narrow the interpretation of Washington's designation of Golden Global Yatırım Bankası and two subsidiaries one day earlier.
Barrack said the measure concerned one institution rather than Türkiye or its financial system. "The health of the Turkish financial system is not in question," he wrote, adding that US Treasury officials and Turkish counterparts had been in direct and continuous contact during the process.
The US Treasury accuses Golden Global of facilitating transactions connected to Iranian oil revenues and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force, including transfers from China into Türkiye for conversion into cash and gold. Golden Global denies the allegations.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control issued a limited wind-down licence running until Sept. 19.
The designation detailed in the Golden Global sanctions file followed the Aug. 24 designation of four Istanbul companies over Iranian-origin petrochemical purchases. Reuters reported that it is the first action against a financial institution in a NATO member state under Washington's current Iran campaign.
Türkiye Appoints Ambassadors to 12 Countries
Türkiye appointed new ambassadors to 12 countries under presidential decisions published in the Official Gazette.
The appointments cover Burundi, the Philippines, Finland, Bahrain, Oman, Namibia, South Korea, Sudan, North Macedonia, Somalia, Gambia and Mozambique. The ambassadors serving in Burundi and North Macedonia were reassigned to headquarters.
Brent at $92.68 One Day Before Türkiye Unveils New Economic Plan
Brent crude ended the week at $92.68 a barrel after gaining 7.6 percent as the Iran conflict and risks around the Strait of Hormuz lifted energy prices.
Türkiye plans to present the details of its 2027-2029 Medium-Term Program on Sunday, Sept. 6, Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz said.
The existing program assumes Brent at $65.1 a barrel for 2027, while the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye has raised its own assumption to $76.4. The government plan pairs its oil assumption with a $62.5 billion energy import bill and a $20.5 billion current-account deficit next year.
Friday's close left Brent $27.58 above the government assumption examined in the 2027 oil-price and economic-plan analysis, one day before the replacement program is due to be presented.

Turkish Eurofighter Pilots Begin Flight Training Sept. 7
Turkish Air Force pilots training in the United Kingdom are scheduled to begin the flying phase of their Eurofighter Typhoon program on Monday, Sept. 7.
Türkiye's Defense Ministry says the pilots have completed terminology training. The flight phase will last eight months, followed by three months of instructor-pilot training, while additional Turkish pilots are sent to Britain in successive groups.
The timetable moves the program from classroom preparation into flying training before Türkiye receives its new-build aircraft, continuing the training sequence that began in Britain in August.
Türkiye Backs Flexible Rules in Autonomous Weapons Talks
Türkiye joined the United States, Russia and India in supporting a non-binding approach during the latest UN-hosted negotiations on lethal autonomous weapons systems in Geneva.
States party to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons met from Aug. 31 through Sept. 4 to work on possible international rules for weapons capable of selecting and engaging targets with varying degrees of human intervention.
Türkiye argued that the relevant legal reference should remain applicable international humanitarian law and opposed language that could restrict functions such as self-defense, safe navigation or mission completion when communications are disrupted.
Türkiye is among the states resisting a new legally binding treaty at this stage. UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the International Committee of the Red Cross have called for binding prohibitions and restrictions.

Iranian Media Report US Missile Strike Near Kharg Island
Iranian media said an Iranian oil tanker near Kharg Island was struck by four US missiles on Saturday.
The reports said there were no casualties and that the crew was being evacuated. US Central Command had not publicly confirmed the strike, and no separate Iranian government confirmation had established the account by the time of publication.
Kharg is a central node of Iran's crude-export infrastructure, so a confirmed strike there would bring the fighting close to one of the most sensitive points in the country's oil system.
The European Union has also condemned Iranian attacks on Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as attacks on Saudi commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Houthis Advance Toward Bab al-Mandab as Red Sea Route Gains Weight
At least 129 people were killed in two days of fighting after Yemen's Houthis launched a ground offensive along the Red Sea coast, according to an Agence France-Presse tally compiled from military and medical sources.
The fighting is centred north of Mokha and near routes leading toward Bab al-Mandab. Military sources said Houthi forces had taken elevated positions overlooking government-held areas, although the group does not control territory directly bordering the strait.
Disruption around Hormuz has increased the value of alternative Gulf export routes through the Red Sea. Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline allows crude to reach Yanbu without passing Hormuz. Cargoes sailing south from the Red Sea terminal toward Asian markets then depend on safe passage through Bab al-Mandab.
South Korea is examining possible contributions to maritime security around Hormuz, including patrol, logistics and mine-clearance assets, but Seoul says no deployment decision has been made. Separately, South Korea has begun testing an Arctic route to Europe, adding another maritime option to its longer-term search for Asia-Europe connections as established shipping routes face growing geopolitical risk.
Israel-Lebanon Front
Katz Ties Israeli Withdrawal to Hezbollah Disarmament After Ali al-Taher Operation
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israel would not withdraw from what he called its security zone in southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is disarmed throughout the country, after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed operational control of the Ali al-Taher ridge.
The IDF says it cleared Hezbollah fighters from underground command infrastructure beneath the ridge. A Lebanese military official told Reuters that Israel controls southern entrances and monitors approaches to the north, while the extent of Israeli control remains unclear.
Hezbollah disputes Israel's account of the operation and the importance of the position.
The United States has proposed transferring the ridge to the Lebanese Army as part of a broader Hezbollah disarmament arrangement, according to the Associated Press. Hezbollah rejected the proposal.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon recorded 56 Israeli projectiles on Sept. 1 and 84 on Sept. 2, while reporting no detected Hezbollah projectile launches since June 21.
Katz has tied Israel's continued military presence in southern Lebanon to nationwide Hezbollah disarmament rather than control of the ridge alone.

The two maritime disasters at the top of Türkiye's regional agenda are at different investigative stages. Filo Jet is a deep-water recovery operation, a criminal inquiry and an examination of the vessel's technical history, with the fallout reaching the Turkish Cypriot transport bureaucracy and parliament. Tuğberk İmamoğlu has now been located far deeper in the Marmara Sea, with all 10 crew members still missing.
Gerapetritis says continental shelf and exclusive economic zone negotiations cannot start because the two governments do not agree on what belongs in the bilateral dispute. At Evros, a reported Turkish diplomatic protest has opened a separate argument over the precise mapping of the land border. The formal maritime track remains closed while operational and diplomatic channels continue elsewhere.
The EU relationship is also appearing inside the Cyprus file from opposite directions. Costa said stronger EU-Türkiye relations could help a settlement, while Ankara accused an European Parliament committee of damaging trust over a proposed memorial linked to 1974. The budget recommendation remains at committee level, but the exchange shows how Cyprus is again entering the wider political relationship between Ankara and Brussels.
Washington's Iran campaign is reaching Türkiye through finance while the conflict reaches it through energy. The Treasury designation brought a Turkish bank directly into the sanctions campaign, prompting Barrack to draw a public line between one institution and the banking system. Brent closed Friday at $92.68, almost $28 above the oil assumption in Türkiye's existing 2027 program, one day before Ankara presents its replacement.
Hormuz is no longer the only maritime pressure point. Disruption there has increased the value of the Red Sea route while the Houthis fight for high ground on approaches to Bab al-Mandab. South Korea's parallel look at Hormuz security and an Arctic shipping test illustrates the wider search for redundancy as established maritime routes become more exposed to geopolitical disruption.
Turkish Eurofighter pilots begin flying in Britain on Monday. In Geneva, Türkiye has also drawn its line on autonomous weapons, resisting a binding treaty that could constrain self-defense, navigation and mission completion when communications are degraded.
In Lebanon, Katz has tied Israeli withdrawal from the south to Hezbollah's disarmament across the country rather than to control of Ali al-Taher alone.
The Great Sea Interconnector still has no new NAVTEX or confirmed survey vessel, the Turkish Cypriot fiber protocol has produced no new parliamentary outcome, Türkiye's Black Sea safe-navigation proposal has no announced Russia-Ukraine agreement, and the planned Kosovo Force command transition remains on its existing timetable.
