Türkiye’s fighter jets moved from Estonia to Latvia’s Lielvārde Air Base as part of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission

Two Turkish F-16 fighter jets landed at Latvia's Lielvārde Air Base on August 21 as Türkiye continued its NATO Baltic Air Policing mission, relocating aircraft from Estonia's Ämari Air Base to the next phase of the allied rotation.

The deployment remains part of NATO's rotating air policing framework in the Baltic region, where allied aircraft support the air defense of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Latvia's Ministry of Defence said the Turkish aircraft arrived from Estonia and would continue allied air presence activities from Lielvārde.

Türkiye's Air Force is participating in the mission with F-16 aircraft and personnel from the 181st Fighter Squadron. The Turkish contingent had previously operated from Ämari Air Base under NATO's Enhanced Air Policing mission.

    From Estonia to Latvia

The move follows Türkiye's ongoing contribution to NATO's eastern flank air mission.

Bosphorus News previously reported Türkiye's takeover of the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission in Estonia, where Turkish F-16s and personnel from the 181st Fighter Squadron assumed responsibility for the allied mission at Ämari Air Base.

The relocation to Latvia continues the same NATO framework rather than representing a separate Turkish deployment. The aircraft remain part of the alliance's rotating air policing structure in the Baltic region.

The Lielvārde deployment places Turkish aircraft at another NATO air base supporting allied air security in the Baltic area while the mission continues under NATO arrangements.

    Türkiye's NATO Air Role

Türkiye has maintained a recurring role in NATO air policing missions across Europe.

Previous Bosphorus News coverage examined Türkiye's NATO air policing missions in Estonia and Romania, including earlier allied planning around Turkish F-16 availability for European air security tasks.

Earlier Bosphorus News analysis also examined NATO's early F-16 requests and Türkiye's role in Baltic air policing planning.

The latest move from Estonia to Latvia adds another stage to Türkiye's participation in NATO's rotating air presence on the alliance's northeastern flank.
