Türkiye Explores New Energy Partnerships as TPAO Holds Talks with Chevron

Bosphorus News Energy Desk

Türkiye’s state energy company Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) is holding discussions with Chevron on potential joint oil and gas exploration projects, according to multiple industry reports.

The talks are focused on upstream cooperation, with an emphasis on technical coordination and the evaluation of exploration prospects rather than immediate drilling commitments. No formal agreement has been announced, and the discussions remain at an exploratory stage.

The contacts come as energy diplomacy in the Eastern Mediterranean grows more active. While Greece and Cyprus have moved forward with a series of international energy agreements, Türkiye has pursued parallel engagement with major global energy companies, seeking to remain present in regional energy developments.

Similar activity has been visible across the region in recent months. Israel, Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, and Türkiye have all entered new agreements or opened talks with international oil and gas majors, reflecting a competitive environment in which access to technology and partnerships has taken on greater weight.

Within this context, Ankara has prioritized arrangements that build technical capacity and distribute exploration risk. The discussions with Chevron follow the same line and are consistent with Türkiye’s recent upstream engagement strategy.

The Chevron talks also come after earlier steps by TPAO to deepen cooperation with other international energy firms. As previously reported by Bosphorus News, TPAO and ExxonMobil signed a technical memorandum of understanding focused on offshore cooperation and data exchange

Taken together, these moves indicate that Türkiye is not reacting passively to regional developments. Instead, Ankara is monitoring shifts in the Eastern Mediterranean energy landscape and advancing its own strategy through selective partnerships, technical preparation, and sustained engagement with international players.
