Türkiye Demands 'Grave Mistake' Be Reversed: Diplomatic Crisis Erupts Over KDP’s Provocative Statement
The Incident: A Short Summary
The diplomatic row originates from a recent public event in Cizre, Türkiye, where a local branch associated with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP)—led by Masoud Barzani in Iraq's Kurdistan Region—held a symposium. The event drew fierce criticism from Turkish nationalists, particularly MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli, over two key issues: the display of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) flag alongside an alleged map that reportedly incorporated Turkish territory, and the highly visible presence of foreign-uniformed armed guards accompanying the KDP delegation, which Bahçeli deemed an assault on Turkish sovereignty.
The conflict dramatically escalated on December 2, when the "Barzani Headquarters Spokesmanship" released a counter-statement that did not merely defend the Cizre event but used personally offensive and highly provocative language against Mr. Bahçeli, triggering an immediate and unified outcry from the Turkish government.
Türkiye’s Diplomatic Hammer Blow
In a swift and unreserved reaction, the Turkish Foreign Ministry and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan himself intervened, demanding accountability from the KDP leadership in Erbil. The response highlights the deep political sensitivities surrounding Kurdish issues and sovereignty within Türkiye, particularly among the ruling coalition partners.
Foreign Ministry Issues Full Rebuke
On December 2, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) released an official statement, No. 242, which fully laid bare Ankara’s outrage.
The ministry stated:
"No: 242, 2 December 2025, Regarding the Statement Published in the Name of the 'Barzani Headquarters Spokesmanship'
The statement published today (December 2) in the name of the 'Barzani Headquarters Spokesmanship' targeting the Chairman of the Nationalist Movement Party, Mr. Devlet Bahçeli, is unacceptable in terms of its content and tone.
An explanation regarding this disrespectful and provocative statement, which contains baseless claims, has been requested from the KDP leadership, and immediate action has been demanded against those responsible."
President Erdoğan Demands 'Izahat'
President Erdoğan publicly backed his coalition partner and escalated the demand directly to the KDP leadership. Speaking at the AK Party's parliamentary group meeting, Erdoğan stressed that disrespect toward any leader in the Turkish political sphere is non-negotiable.
"The statements targeting Mr. Bahçeli are unacceptable. We expressed our discomfort on the issue, and we demanded an explanation. This grave mistake must be reversed," Erdoğan stated, aiming his criticism squarely at Masoud Barzani and his office.
Political Unity in Condemnation
The incident unified the entire Turkish political establishment in condemnation, underscoring the severity of the KDP's perceived transgression against national sentiment.
MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli had initially described the event as a "disgrace," arguing that foreign-uniformed soldiers openly carrying long-barreled weapons on Turkish soil constituted a "deliberate attack on the reputation of the Republic of Türkiye."
The leader of the opposition İYİ Party, Müsavat Dervişoğlu, also weighed in, backing Bahçeli’s stance and asserting that Türkiye's sovereignty must be respected at all times.
The incident now poses a significant challenge to the already complex relationship between Ankara and the KDP, a crucial partner for Türkiye in its efforts to manage regional security and energy dynamics. The fate of this diplomatic relationship hinges on whether the Barzani leadership complies with Ankara's demand to disavow the statement and take tangible action against its authors.
