Türkiye's historic Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival will return to Edirne from June 29 to July 5, placing one of the country's oldest living traditions back on the summer culture and travel calendar.
Edirne Municipality has set the 665th Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival for the final week of June and the first days of July, while ticket notices list July 4-5 as the paid-entry oil wrestling days at Sarayiçi Er Meydanı. The July 3 program will be open to spectators free of charge.
The Türkiye Traditional Wrestling Federation's 2026 calendar lists the Kırkpınar oil wrestling program for July 3-5 in Edirne. The contests will be held at Sarayiçi Er Meydanı, the historic wrestling ground that has long served as Kırkpınar's main arena.
Kırkpınar is more than a sports event. Türkiye's Culture and Tourism Ministry describes it as a seven-day tradition shaped by ceremonies, prayers, music, master-apprentice customs and the formal rituals that surround the wrestlers, known as pehlivans.
The festival is also part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. UNESCO records Kırkpınar as a major cultural gathering in Edirne, drawing spectators across different age groups and communities to watch the competition for the title of başpehlivan, or chief wrestler.
The Culture Portal notes that the wrestling tradition includes prayers for the pehlivans and competitions at Sarayiçi, with the winner receiving the başpehlivan title and the golden belt. Those rituals give Kırkpınar its place in Türkiye's living heritage rather than leaving it as a standard sporting tournament.
The event gives Edirne a major summer tourism week. The former Ottoman capital already sits on a strong cultural route, with Selimiye Mosque, old bazaars, river bridges and border-city history adding travel appeal around Kırkpınar.
The late-June opening gives visitors a full festival week before the July 4-5 ticketed wrestling days, when the strongest crowds are expected at Sarayiçi. The July 3 program will offer free grandstand entry, broadening access before the weekend contests.
