FIFA Chief Infantino Says Iran Will Play World Cup Matches in US During Türkiye Visit

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said Iran will take part in the 2026 World Cup and play its matches in the United States, despite the ongoing war, delivering the message during a visit to Türkiye. The remarks came as the Iranian national team faced Costa Rica in a friendly match on Turkish soil.

Speaking to AFP, Infantino said, "Iran will be at the World Cup and play in the US," confirming that the tournament schedule remains unchanged for the team.

The statement was made on the sidelines of Iran's international friendly in Türkiye, placing Ankara at the centre of a moment where sport, diplomacy and conflict intersected. The match itself carried symbolic weight, with Iranian players wearing black armbands in tribute to children killed in the war.

Infantino's comments come at a time of heightened geopolitical tension, with questions raised over travel, security and participation conditions for teams affected by the conflict. FIFA has not indicated any changes to the tournament structure or hosting arrangements.

Iran has already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
