Military Posture

Israel launched a new wave of strikes on Tehran in the early hours of March 27, targeting what the IDF described as sites "in the heart of the city." The Israeli Air Force also struck the Arak heavy water reactor following an evacuation warning. Iranian state media said no casualties resulted from the Arak strike and that safety measures had been taken in advance.

Israel's defense minister said strikes will "escalate and expand" in response to continued Iranian missile launches. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters on March 27 that results from the operation are expected "in weeks, not months."

The Pentagon and White House are weighing the deployment of at least 10,000 additional combat troops to the Middle East, according to a senior US official cited by AP. No formal order has been confirmed.

Iran struck Iranian diplomats' housing in Lebanon on March 27, according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, which said six diplomats were killed and condemned the attack. Israel has not commented. The claim cannot be independently verified.

Türkiye confirmed on March 27 that it is preparing to establish a NATO multinational corps headquarters under a Turkish general, with the approval process still ongoing. The Defense Ministry said work began in 2023 under NATO's Southeastern Regional Plan and was formally declared to the alliance in 2024. The 6th Corps Command has been assigned to support the formation, with national core staff already appointed. "The work to transform the headquarters into a multinational structure is being carried out in coordination with NATO authorities, and the approval process is still ongoing as NATO procedures have not yet been completed," the ministry said. Bosphorus News reported the development here.

Air and Missile Defence

Iran fired fresh ballistic missile barrages at Israel on March 27, with strikes reported in Netanya and the Herzliya area. A hotel in Herzliya sustained damage. Bahrain and Qatar sounded missile alerts. Kuwait reported attacks on its Shuwaikh and Mubarak al-Kabir ports, with cruise missiles and drones intercepted. No casualties were reported in Kuwait.

Iranian missile and drone attacks on Gulf states continued through the day. The UAE has intercepted 285 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles and 1,567 drones since the start of the war, according to its defense ministry.

Maritime Security

On March 27, Iran blocked two Chinese vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, according to Wikipedia's live war tracker citing state media. Iran showed no sign of easing its grip on the waterway.

Lloyd's List Intelligence reported this week that the IRGC has imposed a de facto toll regime in the strait. Vessels seeking safe passage must submit details to approved intermediaries, receive a code, and are then escorted by an IRGC vessel. At least two ships have paid fees settled in yuan.

A Thai-flagged cargo ship, the Mayuree Naree, came under Iranian attack in the strait on March 27, was abandoned by its crew and ran aground. Three sailors remain unaccounted for. Iranian and Omani authorities reached the vessel on a rescue mission.

Trump extended his deadline for Iran to reopen the strait by ten days to April 6, 2026, at 20.00 ET. Writing on Truth Social, he said Iran had asked for the extension and that talks were "going very well." He cited Iran's release of oil tankers through the strait as a show of good faith, though their origin and destination remain unclear.

Bahrain has circulated a draft UN Security Council resolution seeking authorisation of all necessary means to restore freedom of navigation. The UAE has told allies it will participate in a multinational maritime task force and deploy its own navy.

Diplomacy

Türkiye's Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz opened the Stratcom Summit 2026 in Istanbul on March 27, calling for an immediate ceasefire and a permanent diplomatic resolution. Speaking to journalists at the two-day summit, which runs through March 28 and has drawn senior officials from 38 countries, Yılmaz said the conflict's costs are mounting globally. "The Republic of Türkiye is clearly demonstrating and will continue to demonstrate its stance in favor of peace, in favor of diplomacy, and against wars," he said. He added cautiously: "We hope that these negotiations reach a conclusion. The recent positive messages are encouraging, but uncertainties continue." Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and National Intelligence Organization President İbrahim Kalın are also attending.

Bloomberg reported on March 25 that Türkiye has been urging Gulf states to exercise restraint and not be drawn into the war against Iran. Fidan visited Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar and held calls with other regional counterparts as part of the diplomatic push.

Iran's formal response to the US 15-point peace proposal was expected on March 27, according to a source briefed on the matter cited by Times of Israel. The Trump administration said it had been told via intermediaries that Tehran's counter-proposal would arrive during the day. No confirmed response had been published as of filing.

G7 foreign ministers meeting in Paris on March 27 reiterated that restoring safe and toll-free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is "an absolute necessity." UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said Iran "cannot be allowed to hold the global economy hostage."

Vice President Vance reportedly rebuked Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in a tense call over what US officials described as an overselling of regime change prospects in Iran, according to Times of Israel.

Energy and Infrastructure

Brent crude stood above $107 a barrel on March 27 as Iran maintained its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The University of Michigan's preliminary March consumer sentiment index, released March 27, showed a 5.8 percent decline from February, with the Iran war and rising fuel costs cited as factors.

Iran's parliament is advancing a plan to formally codify sovereignty and fee collection over the strait, according to Iranian media. The Gulf Cooperation Council secretary-general said on March 27 that Iran is already charging fees in violation of international law.

Cyprus and the Eastern Flank

Greek frigates Kimon and Psara will be rotated out of Cyprus within the coming week, with the frigate Elli expected to take over duties, potentially alongside a missile-capable unit. Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias has stated that Athens will maintain its deployment "for as long as necessary," with force posture to be continuously reassessed. The rotation mirrors earlier adjustments in the air component, where F-16s from Souda have already been replaced by aircraft from Araxos and Larissa.

Cyprus is advancing a constitutional amendment that would allow the intelligence service commander to authorise wiretaps without prior judicial approval in national security cases. The proposal, still under parliamentary review, would notify a three-member oversight committee headed by a former senior judge within 72 hours of any surveillance decision. Police would continue to require court warrants. An earlier version giving the attorney general authorisation authority was dropped after a closed committee session on March 20. A separate bill that could allow surveillance of journalists has drawn criticism from the Cyprus Bar Association, which called it unconstitutional. Bosphorus News reported the full legislative picture here.

Israel-Lebanon Front

Israel has killed at least 770 Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon since hostilities escalated, including hundreds from the elite Radwan Force, according to the IDF. Israeli officials said on March 27 that the military aims to take control of all territory south of the Litani River, approximately 30 kilometres north of the border, and described the ground campaign as "prolonged."

IDF Sergeant Aviaad Elchanan Volansky, 21, was buried at Mount Herzl Military Cemetery on March 27. He was the fourth Israeli soldier killed in Lebanon since the start of the war.

The National Institute for Security Studies in Israel reported that at least 1,116 people have been killed in Lebanon since hostilities escalated with the Iran war.

***Unverified: The killing of six Iranian diplomats in Lebanon is based solely on an Iranian Foreign Ministry statement. Israel has not confirmed or denied involvement. The 10,000-troop deployment figure is attributed to a single senior US official and has not been officially confirmed. Iran's formal response to the 15-point proposal had not been published as of filing time.

Casualty figures are drawn from official statements, international agencies and independent research institutions. Strait of Hormuz transit data is based on Lloyd's List Intelligence reporting. The Mayuree Naree incident is confirmed by Thailand's Foreign Ministry.
