Türkiye Warns Against Social Media "Psychological Operations" as Ankara Maintains Mediation Push

President Erdoğan said on March 26 in Ankara that Türkiye is "extremely vigilant against psychological operations conducted through social media platforms." Speaking at the AK Party's expanded provincial chairmen's meeting, he rejected actions that would deepen divisions among regional peoples or provide what he called "logistical support for Zionism's divide, fragment and rule plans." Erdoğan added that Türkiye would not abandon the peoples it considers friends and brothers when they face hardship. Reuters separately reported on March 25, as carried by Türkiye's Directorate of Communications, that Erdoğan said Ankara was working to help establish peace in the Iran war and was weighing measures to shield the economy from the fallout, as Bosphorus News reported on March 26.

Iran Responds to US Plan Through Intermediaries but Rejects Talks

Iran responded to the US 15 point ceasefire proposal through unnamed intermediaries and is awaiting Washington's reply, Tasnim news agency reported on March 26. The exact contents of Iran's response were not disclosed. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Washington's shift in tone amounts to an acknowledgment of failure after previously demanding unconditional surrender. He said Tehran will continue its "resistance" and does not intend to negotiate.

Trump said on March 26 that Iran's leaders "are begging to make a deal, not me" and added he does not care about making a deal. He said the US has additional targets "to hit before we leave." An Iranian official described the US proposal as "maximalist."

Gulf States and Jordan Demand Iraq Stop Pro Iran Attacks

Gulf states and Jordan urged Iraq on March 26 to halt attacks by pro Iran armed groups launched from its territory. Separately, Iraq granted Iran backed paramilitary groups the right to respond to US attacks following a suspected American strike on a base in Anbar province that killed 15 people. Canada condemned Israel's plans to occupy territory in southern Lebanon.

Military Posture

Israel Claims Killing of IRGC Navy Commander Tangsiri in Bandar Abbas Strike

Israel said on March 26 that it killed Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the IRGC Navy, in an overnight airstrike on Bandar Abbas. Defence Minister Israel Katz said Tangsiri was "directly responsible for the terrorist operation of mining and blocking the Strait of Hormuz." The IDF confirmed that IRGC Navy intelligence chief Behnam Rezaei and other senior naval commanders were killed in the same strike.

US Central Command confirmed Tangsiri's death. CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper said the killing puts Iran's navy on a path toward "irreversible decline." The US said it has destroyed most of Iran's larger ships and stripped the navy of much of its ability to project power. Iran has not officially confirmed the killing. If verified, Tangsiri's death removes the figure who directly oversaw the Hormuz blockade and managed the selective passage regime from Bandar Abbas. The operational impact on Iran's maritime posture is immediate; the strategic impact depends on how quickly the IRGC replaces the command structure.

US Israeli Strikes Intensify Across Iran

An Al Jazeera correspondent in Tehran reported on March 26 that US Israeli strikes are "increasing in number and in intensity." Israel announced extensive new strike waves across Iran, including targets in Kermanshah province and Dezful. A senior US officer said the US has now hit two thirds of Iran's missile and drone production facilities.

Trump extended his deadline for Iran to accept the 15 point plan or face strikes on energy infrastructure to Friday, March 28. A mediating country official told the Times of Israel that Trump appears to be leaning toward ordering a ground operation to capture Iran's Kharg Island and has dispatched thousands of troops for the purpose.

Israel's chief of staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir told the cabinet that the military could soon "collapse in on itself" under mounting operational demands and a deepening manpower shortage. Opposition leader Yair Lapid demanded immediate conscription of ultra Orthodox men and action against settler violence in the West Bank.

Türkiye and UK Sign Eurofighter Typhoon Support Deal

Türkiye and the United Kingdom signed a training and support agreement on March 25 for the Eurofighter Typhoon programme. Defence Minister Yaşar Güler and UK Defence Secretary John Healey signed the deal in London. BAE Systems will provide spares, training simulators, electronic warfare capabilities and an initial three year technical support package. The RAF will train 10 Turkish instructor pilots and nearly 100 maintenance technicians. The agreement builds on the October 2025 procurement deal for 20 Typhoons valued at £8 billion. First deliveries are scheduled for 2030, with final assembly at BAE Systems' Warton facility, as Bosphorus News reported.

Air and Missile Defence

Iranian Missiles Strike Central Israel, Hezbollah Rockets Hit Western Galilee

Iranian missiles struck central and northern Israel on March 26. Two salvos were fired within 30 minutes. Eight people were injured, including six in Kfar Qasim and two in Tel Aviv. Hezbollah fired volleys of rockets into the Western Galilee region. The IDF Home Front Command extended wartime guidelines until at least Saturday night, keeping educational activities prohibited in most of the country.

Iran's senior adviser to the supreme leader, Ali Akbar Velayati, warned on March 26 that any country participating in military action against Iran would face "a boomerang" of repercussions. He said "events will definitely occur" in the Persian Gulf to the detriment of those threatening Iran.

Maritime Security

Turkish Owned Tanker Hit by Sea Drone Near Bosphorus

A Turkish operated crude oil tanker was struck by an unmanned sea vehicle in the Black Sea on March 26, approximately 18 nautical miles from the Bosphorus Strait. Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu said the engine room was specifically targeted in a deliberate attack. "We believe the attack was not carried out by a drone, but by an unmanned surface vehicle at water level," he told Kanal 24. The Sierra Leone flagged vessel Altura, operated by Turkish firm Pergamon Shipping, was carrying approximately 140,000 tons of Russian crude loaded at Novorossiysk. All 27 Turkish crew members were unharmed. The Altura is under EU and UK sanctions and classified as a shadow fleet vessel. Engine room damage caused water ingress. Turkish coast guard and rescue vessels were dispatched. No attribution has been made, as Bosphorus News noted.

Tangsiri Killing Raises Questions Over Hormuz Blockade Command

The killing of Tangsiri removes the officer who personally managed the selective Hormuz transit regime from Bandar Abbas. Iran confirmed on March 25 that it would charge vessels a fee for passage. An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson told India Today that fees will "absolutely" be collected. More vessels have begun crossing the strait following Iran's conditional passage announcement, but uncertainty remains. A tanker captain who was granted safe passage told CNN that conditions depend on too many parties to guarantee safety.

Lebanon Casualties Update

Lebanon's Health Ministry reported on March 26 that at least 1,094 people have been killed since March 2, including 121 children. At least 96 people have been killed in Iraq since the conflict began, including seven service members killed on March 26 in a strike on a Defence Ministry clinic.

Energy and Infrastructure

Türkiye's Central Bank Reserves Fall Sharply as Gold Drawdown Accelerates

Bloomberg reported on March 26 that Türkiye's central bank sold and swapped approximately 60 tons of gold, worth more than $8 billion, in two weeks following the start of the Iran war. Gold reserves fell by 6 tons in the week of March 13 and by 52.4 tons in the week of March 20, the sharpest weekly decline since 2018. Gross international reserves dropped $12.2 billion to $177.45 billion in the week ending March 20. Since the war began, total losses reached $32.8 billion in gross reserves and $35.8 billion in swap excluded net reserves. Carry trade outflows over three weeks totalled $14.7 billion.

Israel-Lebanon Front

Israeli Ground Forces Engage Hezbollah Inside Lebanon as Senior Commander Killed

Israeli troops crossed the border and are engaged in active ground combat in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah confirmed clashes with Israeli forces and said its fighters are continuing to resist. The IDF announced it killed Hassan Mohammad Bashir, a senior Hezbollah anti tank missile commander, in an airstrike in the Hajir area on the night of March 25. Bashir had recently begun working with Hezbollah forces north of the Litani River.

Tehran warned that any attempt to occupy an Iranian island would be met with force, with support from an unnamed regional country. The statement did not name the island but follows reporting that the US is preparing to seize Kharg Island.
