BREAKING: Turkish-Owned Oil Tanker Hit in Black Sea, Minister Points to Drone Boat Attack

A Turkish-owned oil tanker was hit by two explosions in the Black Sea, with Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu saying authorities believe the incident may have been carried out by an unmanned sea drone.

The blasts caused damage to the vessel, according to initial reports, with Turkish authorities moving quickly to assess the situation and determine the cause. Early information pointed to a coordinated strike rather than an onboard technical failure.

Uraloğlu said the current assessment is that the tanker was targeted from the sea using an unmanned system. “We assess that the incident was carried out by an unmanned marine vehicle,” he said, adding that technical evaluations are ongoing and that all aspects of the attack are being examined.

The minister did not attribute responsibility but made clear that the incident is not being treated as a routine maritime accident. The use of an unmanned sea platform, if confirmed, would mark a direct extension of drone-based attacks into commercial shipping linked to Türkiye.

Reports from Turkish and international media described the incident as a double blast, reinforcing the view that the tanker may have been deliberately targeted. Authorities have not released full technical details, including the exact location of the strike or the extent of structural damage to the vessel.

The case is being handled as an active investigation, with maritime and security units working to establish how the vessel was approached and struck. No official statement has indicated casualties at this stage.

The incident comes at a time when unmanned sea systems have become more visible in regional conflicts, particularly in the Black Sea. Attacks using such platforms have previously focused on military targets, making the reported strike on a commercial tanker a notable development.

Turkish authorities have not yet announced additional security measures following the incident, but the assessment provided by the transport ministry places the event within a broader pattern of evolving maritime threats.

Further updates are expected as the technical investigation progresses.
