Military Posture
Israel struck Iran's South Pars petrochemical complex on April 6, hitting the Jam and Damavand facilities. Defence Minister Israel Katz said the strike targeted roughly 50 percent of Iran's petrochemical export capacity and would cost Tehran tens of billions of dollars in lost revenue. The attack came separately from Trump's threatened strikes on power plants and bridges, which carry a deadline of April 6 at 20:00 EST. Two IRGC commanders were also killed on April 6: Tuğgeneral Majid Khademi, intelligence chief of the Revolutionary Guard, and Asghar Bakeri, head of the Quds Force's covert operations unit. Israel confirmed both killings.
Greece's military role is extending beyond the Eastern Mediterranean. A Greek Patriot battery deployed in Saudi Arabia's Yanbu region was used under combat conditions to intercept ballistic missiles targeting energy facilities, Defence Minister Nikos Dendias confirmed on March 19. It marked the first public acknowledgment of a Greek-operated system used in combat outside Greece. Air and Missile Defence
Trump's deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz expired at 20:00 EST on April 6, which is 03:00 Türkiye time on April 7. Whether it produces strikes or another extension remains open as this brief goes out.
Iran struck Haifa on April 6 with a ballistic missile. Four members of the same family were found dead in the rubble of a residential building. The warhead did not detonate on impact, complicating rescue operations. Kuwait and the UAE activated air defences on the same day against incoming threats.
Maritime Security
The South Pars strike deepens the energy war dimension of the conflict. The Strait of Hormuz remains closed. Iran's 10-point counter-proposal sets conditions that include a permanent end to the war, the lifting of sanctions and a safe-passage protocol for the strait. Tehran is not seeking a pause. It is seeking terms.
Diplomacy
Türkiye, Egypt and Pakistan submitted a joint 45-day ceasefire proposal to U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on April 6, according to the Associated Press. Iran rejected it. TRT Haber, citing Anadolu Agency, reported that Tehran evaluated the proposal for two weeks before sending its rejection through Pakistan. Iran also submitted a 10-point response setting out conditions for a permanent settlement. Trump has not signed off on the proposal. Energy and Infrastructure
The South Pars strike marks a shift in the target set. Israel has moved from military and command infrastructure toward revenue-generating assets. South Pars is Iran's largest natural gas field and the petrochemical complex attached to it has been Tehran's primary source of hard currency during the war. The strike came on the same day as Trump's Hormuz deadline, compressing two separate pressure tracks into a single 24-hour window.
Greece's Patriot deployment in Yanbu adds a further dimension to Gulf energy security. The East-West pipeline the system protects allows Saudi crude to reach international markets without transiting Hormuz. A Greek air defence battery operating under combat conditions at that chokepoint alternative is a significant extension of Athens's operational reach.
Israel-Lebanon Front
An Israeli strike on Ain Saadeh, a predominantly Christian town east of Beirut, killed a local official from the Lebanese Forces party and two women on April 6. Reuters confirmed the deaths. The Lebanese Forces is a Christian party that opposes Hezbollah. There was no Israeli military order to evacuate before the strike. Residents said the targeted apartment had been unoccupied. The strike deepens sectarian fractures inside Lebanon, with communities that have no connection to Hezbollah now absorbing casualties from Israeli operations.
Hezbollah military commander Yahya Hussein Mshemesh was killed in a strike on Jnah on April 6. The total death toll in Lebanon has passed 1,460.
