Eastern Mediterranean Tensions Surface at UN as Cyprus Lodges Complaint

The Republic of Cyprus has lodged a formal complaint with United Nations Secretary General António Guterres detailing what it describes as a series of violations attributed to Turkish military activity.

In a letter submitted through its Permanent Mission to the UN, Nicosia states that between September and December 2025 it recorded 921 airspace violations and 40 maritime incursions.

According to the Cypriot authorities, 388 of the alleged air violations involved unmanned aerial vehicles and 151 involved armed fighter jets. The incidents are said to have occurred within Cyprus’ national airspace and Flight Information Region (FIR).

The letter also refers to what Nicosia characterizes as the “illegal use” of facilities in the north of the island, including Geçitkale Airport and certain ports.

The complaint was submitted shortly after the UN Security Council renewed the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). The Republic of Cyprus has requested that the letter and its annexes be circulated as official documents of both the General Assembly and the Security Council.

Türkiye has previously rejected similar allegations, maintaining that its activities are conducted in accordance with international law and in defense of the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot side.

The timing of the submission coincides with increased energy exploration activity and diplomatic engagement in the Eastern Mediterranean, where maritime jurisdiction disputes remain unresolved.
