The 36th Akbank Jazz Festival will run across Istanbul from Sept. 26 to Oct. 11, bringing concerts, talks and special projects to venues including Zorlu PSM, Babylon, Salon İKSV, Yeldeğirmeni Sanat and Nardis Jazz Club.
The program opens Sept. 26 with performances by Corda Quintet, Istanbul-based drummer and composer Danae Palaka and London keyboardist and producer Joe Armon-Jones. Momoko Gill and Sarathy Korwar Drum Ensemble are among the artists appearing in the festival's opening days.
Later dates include Tunisian oud player and vocalist Dhafer Youssef on Oct. 7, Cuban-American trumpeter Arturo Sandoval on Oct. 8 and drummer, producer and rapper Kassa Overall on Oct. 9. The closing program on Oct. 11 includes British ensemble Kinkajous and Savina Yannatou & Primavera en Salonico with Lamia Bedioui.
Launched in Istanbul in 1991, the Akbank Jazz Festival has expanded beyond conventional jazz programming over the years to include electronic and world music, workshops, panels and other cultural events. It is a member of the European Jazz Network.
