Türkiye’s Defense Ministry said on March 10, 2026 that a U.S. Patriot air defence system was being deployed to Malatya as part of expanded NATO air and missile defence measures following recent missile incidents linked to the war involving Iran.

According to the ministry, Türkiye has been taking the necessary steps to protect its borders and airspace while remaining in consultation with NATO and allied countries. In that framework, one Patriot system was being positioned in Malatya to support the defence of Turkish airspace. Reuters reported that the deployment was heading to the province that hosts the Kürecik NATO radar base, a key alliance site that provides vital data and helped identify two Iranian ballistic missiles heading toward Türkiye over the past week.

The ministry also said a ballistic munition fired from Iran and entering Turkish airspace was neutralized by NATO air and missile defence elements deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean. Some fragments fell on empty land in Gaziantep, it said, adding that there were no deaths or injuries.

NATO’s official mission description says its support to Türkiye is designed to augment the country’s air defence capabilities through the PATRIOT ground to air guided missile defence system. Reuters also reported that Spain already has one Patriot system deployed in Türkiye under NATO defence arrangements.

The ministry said Ankara attached great importance to good neighborly relations and regional stability, but stressed that any threat directed at Türkiye’s territory or airspace would be met in a determined and unequivocal manner.
