Iran warns of forceful response as US military movements and travel alerts raise tension

Iran warned on February 23 that any US attack would trigger a forceful response and could widen into a regional conflict, as a series of parallel developments added to a volatile atmosphere around US-Iran diplomacy.

In Bulgaria, Sofia Airport temporarily suspended civilian air operations twice over the weekend as US Air Force aircraft staged at the facility. The activity drew public attention as refueling and cargo aircraft were observed moving through the area.

In Israel, US refueler and cargo aircraft were also seen at Ben Gurion Airport amid heightened Iran related tensions.

Travel guidance shifted as well. South Korea and India issued notices urging their nationals to leave Iran, citing the risk of rapid deterioration in the security environment.

The United States also moved to reduce exposure at some diplomatic posts. Washington ordered some staff to depart its embassy in Beirut while keeping the mission operational.

In Washington, debate over military options continued alongside messaging about negotiations. The Washington Post described internal warnings about the risks of a major operation against Iran, including the potential for wider conflict dynamics and pressure points that could spill beyond Iran itself.

Türkiye has urged de escalation and negotiations. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Ankara wants the United States and Iran to reach genuine talks and avoid war, adding that Türkiye’s preference is for diplomacy rather than a military operation.
