Turkish Cargo Vessel Damaged in Strike on Ukraine’s Chornomorsk Port
A Turkish shipping company’s vessel was damaged on Thursday during a strike on Ukraine’s Chornomorsk port, highlighting once again the growing risks to commercial navigation in the Black Sea amid the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war.
The vessel, operated by Cenk Shipping, was docked at the port when the attack occurred. According to local sources, a fire broke out on board following the strike, and emergency teams were dispatched to contain the flames. The crew and accompanying truck drivers were evacuated from the area.
Initial assessments indicate no Turkish citizens were harmed, and the damage to the ship is material rather than structural. Ukrainian sources reported that the attack was part of a broader overnight barrage involving ballistic missiles and drones targeting key coastal infrastructure.
The incident adds to a series of recent attacks affecting maritime assets along Ukraine’s southern coastline, an area that remains vital for the country’s exports and global supply chains. Security analysts note that repeated strikes on port facilities are contributing to rising insurance premiums for regional shipping and causing uncertainty across commercial corridors in the Black Sea.
Turkish MFA Statement
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the following statement regarding the incident:
“In today’s attack (12 December) on Ukraine’s Chornomorsk Port, a foreign-flagged vessel owned by a Turkish company was also damaged. This incident confirms our previously expressed concerns regarding the spillover of the ongoing war in our region into the Black Sea and its negative impact on maritime safety and freedom of navigation.
According to initial information, the crew and the truck drivers on board are being evacuated, and no Turkish citizens have been harmed in the attack. Our Consulate General in Odessa is closely monitoring developments and providing necessary assistance to our citizens.
We once again emphasize the urgent need to end the war between Russia and Ukraine and underline the necessity of establishing arrangements to prevent escalation in the Black Sea, ensuring navigation safety, and suspending attacks targeting the parties’ energy and port infrastructure.”
Increasing Black Sea Security Risks
The damage to the Turkish vessel illustrates the increasingly unpredictable environment for civilian maritime traffic in the Black Sea. Chornomorsk, together with Odesa and nearby ports, plays a critical role in the export of grain and industrial goods. Any disruption to these facilities has repercussions extending beyond Ukraine, affecting supply chains across Europe, the Mediterranean, and global markets.
Diplomats note that Ankara’s response reflects Türkiye’s longstanding position: urging restraint, safeguarding maritime security, and supporting efforts to stabilize the region while protecting Turkish nationals and commercial interests.
The attack also comes at a time when shipping insurers are reassessing their risk models for the region, resulting in rising premiums and routing adjustments for vessels operating near Ukraine’s southern coast.
