Turkish Airlines Halts Venezuela Flights After US-Issued Aviation Security Warning

Turkish Airlines (THY), one of the few international flag carriers maintaining direct connections to Venezuela, has temporarily suspended its flights to the country. The precautionary move came directly in response to a high-level safety warning issued by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which cited a "potentially hazardous situation" linked to rising military tensions in the region.

THY confirmed the immediate suspension of its Istanbul-Caracas services, effective from November 24 through November 28, 2025. This critical safety decision aligns the Turkish carrier with at least six other major international airlines, including TAP Air Portugal, LATAM, Avianca, and Iberia, which also cancelled flights following the US advisory.

The FAA’s Security Alert

The catalyst for the industry-wide cancellations was a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) issued by the FAA on Friday, November 21, urging all civil aircraft operators to "exercise caution" when flying within the Maiquetía Flight Information Region (FIR SVZM), which covers Venezuelan airspace.

The advisory explicitly detailed a "worsening security situation and heightened military activity," warning that unspecified threats could pose a risk to aircraft at all altitudes, including during the critical takeoff and landing phases, and even to planes parked on the ground.

The temporary suspension by THY, whose flights had become a crucial transit link for the South American nation, highlights the severity of the perceived risk, forcing safety-conscious carriers to prioritize crew and passenger security over commercial operations.

The aviation alert is unfolding against a tense backdrop of heightened US-Venezuela geopolitical friction. The FAA warning coincided with a major deployment of US naval and air assets to the Caribbean Sea, including the presence of the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier strike group.

While Washington insists its operations are primarily focused on counter-narcotics missions, the massive military buildup has been interpreted by the administration of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro as a coercive strategy. This atmosphere of regional instability has created an operational environment deemed too risky for continued civilian air travel.

THY has advised passengers affected by the Istanbul-Caracas cancellation that they are being rerouted to alternative hubs, including Bogotá, Panama, Cancun, or Havana, until the security situation allows for the resumption of its direct service. The uncertainty surrounding the geopolitical situation means industry observers expect the cautionary pause to be potentially extended if the FAA does not withdraw or downgrade its severe security advisory.
