Türkiye's Interior Ministry said on May 4 that 1,407,568 Syrians have returned from Türkiye to Syria voluntarily, safely, honorably and in an orderly manner since 2016, rejecting claims that official figures on Syrian returns were inconsistent.

The ministry said recent media reports had compared figures from different periods as if they covered the same timeframe, calling that approach "misleading" and "far from reality."

According to the ministry's official statement, the total number announced by Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi refers to all voluntary returns recorded from 2016 to the present.

"Within this scope, the number of Syrians who have returned from our country voluntarily, safely, honorably and in an orderly manner since 2016 is 1,407,568," the ministry said.

The ministry also cited updated data from the Presidency of Migration Management, saying 2,280,542 Syrians remain in Türkiye under temporary protection status.

It added that 667,565 Syrians have returned voluntarily since December 8, 2024, marking a separate period from the cumulative figure covering the years since 2016.

The statement also referred to figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, saying the agency estimates that 1,630,874 Syrians have returned to Syria across the wider region since December 8, 2024.

According to the ministry, Türkiye ranks first in that regional breakdown with 639,995 returns, based on data compiled from border crossings, population movement reports and different data sources.

The clarification comes as Syrian returns have again become a major domestic and regional issue following the political shift in Damascus after December 8, 2024. Türkiye has framed the process as voluntary and orderly, while opposition parties and some media outlets have questioned the scale and timing of the official figures.

The ministry's message was direct. The 1.4 million figure refers to the total since 2016. The 667,565 figure refers to returns after December 8, 2024. Treating those numbers as if they measure the same period, the ministry said, distorts the record.
