Local sources report that Türkiye has begun constructing a new military road in the mountainous areas of Duhok province in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

According to Hawar News, engineering units are opening a new route in rugged terrain near the Deraluk district, using controlled explosions to clear rocky sections. The report states that the road is approximately 15 kilometres long and is designed to link existing Turkish military positions in the area.

Shafaq News described the route as a new supply and mobility corridor intended to strengthen logistical access between Turkish outposts in northern Duhok. Heavy machinery and blasting operations are said to be ongoing in forested and high-altitude areas.

No official statement has been issued by Ankara regarding the construction. Iraqi federal authorities and the Kurdistan Regional Government have not released new public comments on the reported works.

Development Road Project Context

The reported construction comes as discussions continue over the Iraq–Türkiye “Development Road” project.

Previously covered by Rudaw, the project envisions a major transport corridor stretching from the Grand Faw Port in Basra to the Turkish border, integrating highway and railway infrastructure. Iraqi officials have stated that only a limited segment of the corridor would pass through territory administered by the Kurdistan Regional Government before reaching Türkiye.

Talks between Baghdad and Erbil over the route and implementation framework remain ongoing.
