Türkiye's Buffer Zone Plan Contradicts Official Disinformation Denial

Türkiye's Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi announced on March 5 that the government is preparing three scenarios to manage a potential migration wave from Iran. The first is to intercept and manage movement on the Iranian side before it reaches Turkish borders. The second is to establish buffer zones along the border line if the first scenario proves insufficient. The third, described as a last resort, is to bring migrants inside Türkiye and shelter them under controlled conditions. Initial capacity preparations cover 90,000 people, including tent cities and temporary shelter areas across the border provinces of Van, Hakkari, Iğdır and Ağrı. Çiftçi said there is no extraordinary density at the border gates at present and no alarming situation, but that all state institutions remain on high alert.

The announcement sits in direct tension with a statement issued by the Presidency's Directorate of Communications. The directorate said claims circulating in certain media outlets that Türkiye was planning to enter Iranian territory on security grounds contained disinformation. It described Türkiye as a country that consistently upholds the territorial integrity and sovereignty of neighbouring countries and said it takes all necessary measures to secure its borders on a continuous basis. The public was urged to refrain from giving credence to unverified claims and to rely only on official statements from competent authorities.

The Interior Minister's second scenario describes the establishment of zones on Iranian soil. The Directorate of Communications rejected that framing as disinformation. Both statements are official. The contradiction between them has not been addressed.
