TRNC Early Election Calls Intensify: Opposition Demands Snap Polls Amid Crisis

Opposition voices in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) are ramping up demands for early parliamentary elections, citing economic woes, institutional decay, and political gridlock just months after Tufan Erhürman’s presidential win in October 2025. CTP leader Sıla Usar İncirli declared, “The people are waiting for the CTP and we are ready. Early elections are inevitable,” targeting a vote in the first quarter of 2026. She blasted the ruling coalition for dodging a March call, aiming instead for January 2027, and vowed to press the issue during budget debates and with civil society.

Voices Driving the Early Election Demand

Leaders from KTÖS—the Cyprus Turkish Teachers' Union (Kıbrıs Türk Öğretmenler Sendikası), a key trade union for primary school educators founded in 1976—echoed the urgency, warning, “Relying on Ankara won’t save you. Early elections are not a choice but a necessity.” TDP’s Yasemin Çobanoğlu added, “This system can’t govern the country; early polls are unavoidable.” Main opposition parties urged no-confidence motions, while İncirli stressed, “The public awaits CTP, and we’re prepared,” amid claims state institutions are “collapsing.”

Ruling coalition figures pushed back, with one stating early elections aren’t on their agenda: “If opposition wants change, file a no-confidence vote.” Recent parliamentary failures to convene, as in November 2025, have heightened tensions post-Erhürman’s 63% victory over Ersin Tatar, shifting focus to legislative renewal.
