Türkiye rejects Greek map on EU platform, calling it an “illegal fait accompli” that violates its maritime jurisdiction.
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a firm response to a Greek-issued maritime map published on the European Commission’s Maritime Spatial Planning Platform, stating that the map blatantly disregards Türkiye’s maritime jurisdiction and attempts to impose an unlawful geopolitical narrative. In its statement, the Ministry said Türkiye “rejects this illegal fait accompli,” stressing that the map misrepresents maritime boundaries in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean by unilaterally projecting Greek claims onto an EU platform without consultation or legal basis. According to Ankara, the map not only contradicts international law but also undermines ongoing diplomatic channels at a time when both countries are seeking to maintain dialogue. Turkish officials emphasized that Greece’s presentation of maximalist maritime claims as if they were EU-endorsed facts is unacceptable. The statement further noted that Türkiye will continue to defend its rights and interests in both the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean, and that no map or document published unilaterally can alter the country’s legal standing or its maritime jurisdiction areas. The Ministry called on the European Commission to act responsibly and prevent its platforms from being used to legitimize unilateral claims that could escalate regional tensions. As the issue gains visibility, analysts expect Ankara to raise the matter through diplomatic channels in Brussels and to reiterate its position during upcoming bilateral contacts with Athens.
