Türkiye Installs ASELSAN Radar System at Damascus Airport

Türkiye has installed an ASELSAN-produced air surveillance radar system at Damascus International Airport, according to Turkish media reports and official statements.

The system is intended to support air traffic monitoring and flight safety in Syrian airspace. Turkish sources say the radar will provide continuous detection and tracking of airborne objects, including aircraft operating at low altitude or without transponder signals.

ASELSAN has not disclosed operational specifics beyond confirming that the system integrates primary radar functions with identification capabilities. Turkish outlets report that the radar can operate independently of onboard aircraft systems and is designed for use in congested or degraded airspace environments.

Turkish authorities have framed the deployment as a technical measure focused on flight safety rather than air defence. No weapons systems were reported as part of the installation.

Regional Reaction

Israeli media coverage has described the deployment as a sensitive development, citing concerns that expanded radar coverage in Syria could affect air operations in the region. Israeli reporting, citing Western intelligence sources, claims that the installation could restrict the freedom of action of the Israel Air Force in Syrian airspace and complicate the use of that airspace for broader regional operations.

Israeli officials have not issued a formal public statement on the installation. Ankara has not directly responded to the Israeli coverage. Turkish officials continue to characterise the radar as a civilian and airspace-management system rather than a military capability intended to alter regional military dynamics.

The installation comes amid broader Turkish involvement in technical and infrastructure-related support projects linked to Syria’s aviation and transport sectors.
