Spain Signs €2.6 Billion Deal for Turkish-Built HÜRJET Training Jets

Spain and Türkiye have signed a €2.6 billion agreement under which the Spanish Air and Space Force will acquire HÜRJET advanced jet trainer aircraft, marking a major defence export for Türkiye and a new phase in bilateral aerospace cooperation.

The agreement, signed between Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI/TUSAŞ) and Spanish counterparts, covers the delivery of the aircraft alongside training, maintenance, and long-term logistical support. The deal is expected to include industrial cooperation elements and phased deliveries over the coming years.

What is HÜRJET?

The HÜRJET is a Turkish-designed, single-engine supersonic advanced jet trainer and light combat aircraft, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries. Designed for next-generation pilot training, the platform is intended to replace older trainer aircraft while also offering limited light-attack capability. The aircraft conducted its maiden flight in April 2023 and represents one of Türkiye’s most advanced indigenous aerospace programmes to date.

According to publicly available information, the Spanish procurement will see HÜRJET integrated into Spain’s pilot training system, positioning the aircraft within a NATO framework. The agreement is also notable as HÜRJET’s first major export to a European Union and NATO member, underlining Ankara’s expanding footprint in the European defence market.

Officials have framed the deal as part of a broader trend toward deeper industrial cooperation between Türkiye and Spain in aerospace and defence technologies. Further details regarding delivery schedules and production sharing are expected to be clarified in subsequent phases of the programme.
