Smart Flight: Samsung & Turkish Airlines Deploy Galaxy SmartTag Tech to End Lost Luggage Nightmare

In a significant move to elevate the customer experience and solve one of aviation's most persistent problems, Samsung Electronics and Turkish Airlines (THY) have officially launched a partnership centered on next-generation baggage tracking.

The collaboration, which commenced with the launch of the Smart Tagged Baggage Service on December 1, 2025, integrates Samsung’s immense SmartThings Find platform into the national carrier’s operations. This means that travelers equipped with a Galaxy SmartTag can now track their checked luggage in real-time via their mobile devices, turning the traditionally anxiety-ridden waiting game at the carousel into a seamless, data-driven process.

The move marks a pivotal moment in how major airlines address baggage management, leveraging consumer hardware and a global digital network to establish unprecedented transparency for travelers.

The Technology: A Global Mesh Network for Your Suitcase

The backbone of this new service is Samsung’s vast ecosystem. SmartThings Find utilizes Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, powered by a massive, interconnected global network of over 700 million Samsung Galaxy devices.

Essentially, when a bag equipped with a Galaxy SmartTag passes near any registered Galaxy device—a passenger’s phone, an airport employee’s tablet, or even a local resident’s device—its location is anonymously reported back to the owner. This creates an unparalleled, dynamic mesh network, ensuring reliable tracking even outside the traditional bounds of the airport’s own infrastructure.

For THY, this technological leap translates directly into greater operational efficiency. As the airline stated, by integrating the passenger’s location data (if provided by the SmartTag) into their lost baggage reports, the carrier can now locate and redirect mishandled luggage far more quickly and effectively.

"Samsung is expanding the SmartThings Find experience through cross-industry collaborations to ensure our customers remain connected and feel secure, wherever they are," said Jaeyeon Jung, EVP and Head of SmartThings at Samsung Electronics. "We are delighted to partner with Turkish Airlines to offer a more comfortable and smooth travel experience."

Why This Partnership Matters: Addressing the $5 Billion Problem

The timing of this high-tech intervention couldn't be better. Despite significant industry improvements, baggage mishandling remains a major operational and financial challenge for global airlines.

According to data from SITA, the air transport industry's IT specialist, while the mishandled bag rate dropped slightly to 6.3 per 1,000 passengers in 2024, delayed and lost luggage still cost the global aviation sector an estimated $5 billion annually.

Key statistics underscore the depth of the challenge the Samsung/THY partnership aims to solve:

  • Delay Dominates: The majority of reported incidents, approximately 74%, involve simply delayed bags, not permanently lost ones.
  • Transfer Trauma: The single biggest cause of mishandled luggage, accounting for roughly 41% of all errors, occurs during passenger and bag transfers between connecting flights.

By giving both the passenger and the airline direct, real-time location data for a delayed bag, the new service drastically cuts the uncertainty and response time associated with these transfer-related errors.

Dr. Kerem Kızıltunç, Assistant General Manager (Information Technologies) at Turkish Airlines, emphasized the commitment to innovation: "We are pleased with this cooperation with Samsung to offer our passengers the most advanced technologies... We will continue to strengthen our leadership in the sector with technological collaborations that prioritize passenger satisfaction and set new standards in the aviation industry."

Looking ahead, Turkish Airlines plans to explore expanding the use of SmartThings Find beyond baggage management, aiming to develop long-term collaborations with Samsung on AI-powered devices and software solutions to further enhance customer service throughout the travel journey.
