Russia Warns Greece Over Naval Drone Deal with Ukraine, Calls It ‘Confrontational’
Russia has issued a strong warning to Greece following a recent agreement between Athens and Kyiv to jointly develop unmanned surface vessels (USVs), also known as maritime drones. Moscow’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, framed the deal as part of an “openly unfriendly” Western push against Russia. Zakharova claimed that Greece’s cooperation with Ukraine is not just a defense matter but a symbolic alignment with broader anti-Russian efforts. She criticized Athens for being “among the first to send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine,” arguing that these supplies are now used by Ukrainian forces in areas that Moscow claims. According to her, this latest move—maritime drone cooperation—is just another layer of provocation. “This step, like many other anti-Russian actions by the collective Western world … will be followed by an appropriate response,” she said. Athens rejected Moscow’s threats outright. Greek diplomatic sources emphasized that “every sovereign state has the right to conclude inter‑state agreements” and affirmed that the drone pact ensures energy security and stability. Greek officials added that they will not be intimidated. “Threats against sovereign states are automatically rejected,” they said, underlining Greece’s commitment to international law.
