President Erdoğan: Global Will Can 'Stop Netanyahu' as Türkiye Rises to Defense Powerhouse

The Call for a Sanction-Capable Will on Gaza

Speaking to reporters on his return flight from the recent G20 Leaders' Summit, President Erdoğan delivered a sharp condemnation of the international community's current approach to the conflict in Gaza. He argued that the sporadic global outrage has failed to translate into effective deterrent action against the Israeli leadership.

"I believe that if the international community shows a determined, consistent and sanction-capable will, it can stop Netanyahu," Erdoğan stated, underscoring the necessity of moving beyond mere diplomatic rhetoric to implement strong, unified pressure.

The Turkish leader stressed the dual needs of the crisis: stronger diplomatic action to enforce the full implementation of the ceasefire and ensuring uninterrupted humanitarian aid access into Gaza. He also praised the restraint shown by Hamas, asserting that the group was exhibiting "great patience" despite continued provocations from Israel.

This statement comes amid heightened global scrutiny over the conflict, including multiple actions taken by international bodies. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has passed several resolutions calling for increased aid and a cessation of hostilities (though a direct, unconditional ceasefire call has often been blocked or watered down by permanent members). Crucially, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued multiple provisional measures against Israel in the genocide case brought by South Africa, ordering steps to prevent genocidal acts and ensure humanitarian relief at scale. The Turkish president's call highlights the gap between these legal rulings and their effective enforcement.

Türkiye as a "Rising Power"

Shifting focus to Türkiye's own geopolitical stance, President Erdoğan reiterated that the country would maintain its upward trajectory as a "rising power" amidst shifting global alliances. This ambition, he explained, is rooted in heavy investments in key strategic sectors.

Defense Industry Drives Growth

The most concrete evidence of Türkiye's rising power status is found in its booming defense and aerospace industry. This sector has seen massive growth driven by indigenous development, particularly in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), which have achieved international acclaim and market dominance.

  • Export Record: Türkiye's defense and aerospace exports reached a record $7.15 billion in 2024, marking a 29% increase over the previous year and significantly exceeding governmental targets.
  • Global Reach: The country's defense products were exported to approximately 180 different countries in 2024, demonstrating its expanding global footprint.
  • UAV Leadership: Companies like Baykar have become global leaders, with their systems (such as the Bayraktar TB2) being exported to dozens of countries, cementing Türkiye's role as a major player in the global defense technology market.

Erdoğan affirmed that this national investment in defense, high technology, and energy is part of a long-term strategic vision, emphasizing that the government is planning policies "with the next 50 to 100 years in mind."

Finally, he re-confirmed Türkiye's readiness to use its diplomatic weight in other conflicts, offering to maintain its "constructive stance" in mediating the Russia-Ukraine conflict, similar to the Black Sea grain deal talks hosted earlier in Istanbul.
