Olympiacos at 100: A Century of One of World's Great Sporting Institutions
By Bosphorus News Sports Desk
Olympiacos marked the 100th anniversary of its founding on March 10, celebrating a century of sporting success that extends far beyond football and into the wider history of Greek and European sport.
Founded in 1925 in the port city of Piraeus, Olympiacos quickly developed into a central pillar of Greek sporting culture. While its football team became the most successful club in Greece, the broader Olympiacos organization evolved into one of Europe’s most decorated multi-sport institutions.
Under the umbrella of Olympiacos CFP, the club operates successful departments in basketball, volleyball, water polo and several other sports. Across these disciplines, Olympiacos has built a remarkable international record, winning numerous European titles and establishing itself as one of the most successful multi-sport clubs on the continent.
Football remains the flagship of the organization. Olympiacos F.C. has won 48 Greek league titles, along with dozens of domestic cups, making it the most decorated football club in Greece. The club reached another historic milestone in 2024, when it won the UEFA Europa Conference League, becoming the first Greek team to lift a major European club trophy.
The team plays its home matches at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, where generations of supporters have built one of the most passionate fan cultures in European football. Among supporters, the club is widely known as “Thrylos” — the Legend.
Centennial celebrations in 2025 included large scale events across Piraeus and symbolic tributes marking the club’s founding moment in 1925. For many supporters, the anniversary is not only about trophies but also about the identity of a club deeply connected to the maritime and working-class traditions of its home city.
A century after its creation, Olympiacos stands not simply as a football club, but as one of the defining sporting institutions of modern Greece.
