On March 27, 2026, NATO decided to withdraw its mission from Iraq, with Türkiye confirming that its troops stationed in Baghdad had been evacuated, according to an official statement by the Turkish Defense Ministry, which also said Ankara supported the evacuation of allied personnel.

“NATO authorities have decided to withdraw the NATO Mission Iraq,” the ministry said. It added that “the evacuation of our Turkish Armed Forces personnel serving in Baghdad has been successfully completed.”

The ministry also said Türkiye supported the evacuation of allied personnel as part of NATO’s withdrawal plan, highlighting Ankara’s operational role during the drawdown.

The announcement linked the move to the worsening security environment in the region. In the same statement, the ministry said clashes between the United States, Israel and Iran, along with what it described as Israel’s continuing aggression, were threatening peace and stability in the Middle East.

Türkiye said it continues to support regional and global peace through international missions and bilateral engagements, while maintaining its call for restraint and for disputes to be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy under international law.
