NATO Intercepts Fourth Iranian Ballistic Missile Over Türkiye

Fourth Intercept in Less Than a Month

A ballistic munition launched from Iran and entering Turkish airspace was neutralised by NATO air and missile defence assets deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean on 30 March, the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of National Defence announced.

The ministry said "all necessary measures are being taken decisively and without hesitation against any threat directed at our country's territory and airspace."

The incident is the fourth of its kind since 4 March. Previous intercepts were recorded on 4 March in Dörtyol, Hatay; on 9 March over Şahinbey, Gaziantep; and on 13 March near Incirlik Air Base in Adana province. No casualties or significant damage were reported in any of the four incidents.

No Trajectory or Target Detail Released

The ministry did not disclose the missile's trajectory, type, or intended target. It stated that developments in the region were being closely monitored with priority given to national security.

Iran has denied involvement in the previous three intercepts. Turkish authorities maintain that technical data in each case points to launches from Iranian territory.

NATO and Alliance Response

Following the earlier incidents, NATO condemned Iran's targeting of Türkiye and reaffirmed its commitment to alliance defence. "Our deterrence and defence posture remains strong across all domains, including when it comes to air and missile defence," NATO spokesperson Allison Hart said after the first intercept.

An additional Patriot battery was subsequently deployed to Malatya, and a further reinforcement was announced on 18 March, marking the second such deployment since the US-Israel-Iran conflict began on 28 February.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said there is "no sense" the intercepts would trigger NATO's Article 5 collective defence clause.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has conveyed Ankara's formal protest to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, calling Iran's repeated violations of Turkish airspace "unacceptable" and urging all parties to avoid steps that could widen the conflict.
