Mitsotakis and Erdoğan Weigh 2026 Meeting as Diplomatic Groundwork Continues

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan are considering a possible bilateral meeting in 2026, as diplomatic groundwork continues through established channels, according to Greek media reports published on January 13.

Discussions are taking place within the framework of the High-Level Cooperation Council (HLCC), which has served as the main platform for political engagement during the recent normalization phase in Türkiye–Greece relations. While no date or location has been set, officials indicate that preparations are being handled incrementally rather than through a single decisive step.

Preparatory contacts are expected to proceed at the level of foreign ministries and senior officials, focusing on sustaining communication, coordinating agendas, and keeping existing confidence-building mechanisms active. These contacts are aimed at maintaining stability and managing differences ahead of any potential leaders’ meeting.

Officials in Athens have framed the process as cautious and procedural, noting that technical talks and exploratory contacts remain central. Ankara, for its part, has consistently underlined the importance of dialogue without preconditions while maintaining its positions on regional and security-related issues.

Both sides signal that any future meeting would reflect accumulated diplomatic engagement rather than a symbolic reset. As of now, neither government has issued an official confirmation regarding a finalized timetable.
