Greece Deploys Patriot and F-16s to Bulgaria. Greece's Communist Party Is Not Pleased.

Greece's Communist Party (KKE) has sharply condemned Athens' decision to deploy a Patriot missile defence system and F-16 fighter jets to northern Greece to protect Bulgaria, calling it a dangerous escalation of Greek involvement in an active war theatre.
Defence Minister Nikos Dendias announced the deployment on Friday following a formal request from Sofia. A Patriot battery will be relocated to northern Greece to provide anti-ballistic coverage for a large part of Bulgarian territory. Two F-16s will be stationed at an airbase in the same region with what the ministry described as the sole mission of protecting Bulgaria. Senior Greek air force officers will also travel to Sofia to assist with coordination.
The KKE's press bureau issued a statement rejecting the move on multiple grounds.
The party argued that providing military assistance to Bulgaria exposes the pretext used to justify Greece's earlier deployment to Cyprus, which the government framed as protection for the island's Greek population. If military assistance to a NATO ally requires no such justification, the KKE said, the Cyprus framing collapses.
The party also took aim at Dendias for acknowledging an Iranian threat to Bulgaria. KKE said this admission directly contradicts what it described as deliberate complacency cultivated by the government and by what the party called "parrots with the cloak of experts," referring to analysts and media figures it regards as government mouthpieces, who have repeatedly claimed that Souda Bay in Crete is too far from Iran or sits at the outer limit of Iranian missile range.
KKE further warned of broader regional ignition, citing the presence of multiple active war fronts in the wider area. The party noted that Greek military units heading to northern Greece are not positioned solely to monitor Bulgarian airspace. They are also in proximity to multiple US military installations in the region, including the strategically significant base at Alexandroupolis.
Bulgaria, for its part, has stated it is not a party to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran. Sofia's request to Athens came amid public concern over Iranian attacks and threats against countries hosting American forces, following joint NATO exercises on Bulgarian soil.
Greece has previously deployed both Patriot systems and F-16 jets to Cyprus under a separate arrangement.
The KKE statement was issued in response to Dendias' Friday announcement and referenced the agenda of the Greek Government Council of Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA).
