Greek Cypriot daily claims Türkiye has deployed HİSAR air-defence systems in Northern Cyprus

Greek Cypriot media outlets have reported that Türkiye has deployed HİSAR air-defence systems in Northern Cyprus, fuelling renewed discussion over the island’s military balance.

The claims, attributed primarily to the Greek Cypriot daily Simerini, allege that Turkish-made air-defence units have been positioned in the north, with particular reference to the Kyrenia (Girne) area. The reporting points to the presence of launchers, radar elements and command-and-control components operating as part of a broader, networked air-defence structure associated with Türkiye’s Çelik Kubbe concept.

Turkish authorities have not publicly confirmed any such deployment. No statement has been issued by the Defence Ministry or other official bodies addressing the claims reported in the Greek Cypriot press.

The HİSAR family consists of domestically developed short- and medium-range surface-to-air missile systems designed to counter fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, guided munitions and unmanned aerial vehicles. The family includes HİSAR-A, configured for low-altitude air defence, and HİSAR-O, intended for medium-altitude engagement. Engagement ranges are reported to exceed 15 kilometres for low-altitude variants and 25 kilometres for medium-altitude versions.

The systems are modular in design and built for integration with radar, electro-optical sensors and command-and-control networks. The interceptor missiles are produced by Roketsan, while other components are supplied by Türkiye’s domestic defence industry. Guidance is based on inertial navigation supported by infrared imaging seekers and data-link updates, allowing engagement of multiple aerial threat types within a layered air-defence structure.

Greek Cypriot reporting places emphasis not on the transfer of a single platform, but on the possibility of an integrated air-defence posture in the north of the island. In this framing, sensor coverage and coordination are presented as the defining elements of the alleged deployment.

At this stage, the claims remain based on media reporting alone. There is no official confirmation regarding the scale, timing or operational status of any HİSAR systems in Northern Cyprus. Until such confirmation emerges, the reports remain unverified.
