Greece Keeps Cyprus Talks Inside UN Framework After Holguín Meeting

By Bosphorus News Geopolitics Desk

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis met United Nations envoy María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar in Athens on June 17, keeping Greece's Cyprus message inside the existing United Nations framework as diplomatic contacts continue around the island's stalled talks.

The Greek Foreign Ministry said Holguín's visit followed her contacts with Republic of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and the Turkish Cypriot leader. Gerapetritis expressed Greece's support for efforts by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to seek a comprehensive, just and viable settlement of the Cyprus issue under relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The ministry said Gerapetritis stressed the need to preserve the momentum formed around the Cyprus file over the past two years. Greece remains ready, in coordination with the Republic of Cyprus, to contribute to the next steps aimed at restarting talks under United Nations auspices and on the basis of the agreed framework, the statement said.

The wording keeps Athens aligned with the Republic of Cyprus and the United Nations track rather than a new settlement formula. It also places Holguín's mission inside the dispute over the negotiating basis, after Turkish Cypriot political parties reviewed the process in a recent meeting covered by Bosphorus News, as Türkiye and the Turkish Cypriot side continue to argue that sovereign equality must be recognized before formal talks resume.
