Military Posture
US Congress Moves on Turkish F-16s in Cyprus
U.S. Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis condemned Türkiye's deployment of F-16 fighter jets to northern Cyprus on 20 March, calling it a "brazen provocation." She urged the immediate lifting of the U.S. arms embargo on the Republic of Cyprus under H.R. 4413, which would allow Nicosia to procure advanced air defence systems. The move reflects growing congressional scrutiny of Türkiye's military footprint on the divided island at a moment when the broader Eastern Mediterranean is under significant military pressure.
TCG Anadolu Returns, Rutte Names Türkiye and Romania
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said in Brussels on 19 March that what Romania and Türkiye are doing to keep the Black Sea safe is "crucial," placing both allies in the same formulation while their contributions differ significantly in scale. TCG Anadolu, Türkiye's drone carrier, completed its Baltic mission under NATO Air Command and is now returning through the Mediterranean. NATO Patriot systems arrived at Adana on 18 March under Ramstein command. Bosphorus News analysis on what Rutte's formulation obscures about Türkiye's actual operational tempo is here: Türkiye and Romania Are Not Doing the Same Job.
NATO Sea Guardian / TCG Gaziantep
NATO's Operation Sea Guardian ran a focused maritime security operation in the Eastern Mediterranean in early 2026, with the Turkish frigate TCG Gaziantep serving as the lead vessel. The operation concentrated on maritime awareness and deterrence across the basin as the Iran war entered its third week.
TRNC: "Türkiye Is the Guarantor of the Entire Island"
TRNC President Tufan Erhürman defended Türkiye's F-16 deployment on 19 March, invoking the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee. "Under this country's status, the Republic of Türkiye is the guarantor of the entire island. Well, what is France? What is the Netherlands? What status do they hold with respect to the island?" Erhürman also challenged European Parliament President Roberta Metsola over her celebration of EOKA's founding anniversary and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen over her reference to Cyprus as a land of "Byzantine churches." Full report: TRNC President Erhürman.
Cyprus: Level 3 Security / Evacuation Hub
The Republic of Cyprus has moved to a Level 3 security footing and is preparing to serve as the primary evacuation hub for U.S. and European civilians from Lebanon and Israel. The designation reflects the island's dual role: a forward military platform and a civilian emergency corridor simultaneously.
Air and Missile Defence
GPS Jamming Over Nicosia FIR
NOTAM A0126/26 remains active for the Nicosia Flight Information Region, warning of intense GNSS interference, including spoofing and jamming, through 1 May. The source has not been officially attributed. The interference is consistent with electronic warfare activity by multinational forces operating across the Eastern Mediterranean theatre.
Greece's Achilles Shield: Parliament Approval, Israeli Technology
Greece's Special Standing Committee on Armament Programmes approved a nearly €5 billion defence package on 16 March, centred on the Achilles Shield air defence system valued at approximately €3 billion. The multi-layered architecture incorporates Israeli systems including David's Sling, Barak MX and Spyder, developed by IAI and Rafael. An AI-driven command and control layer is in final technical negotiations with Jerusalem. The first wave of deployments is targeted for 2026. SETA has noted the programme raises questions about the demilitarised status of Aegean islands. Full report: Greece Clears Achilles Shield. The Karpathos-Cyprus defensive umbrella framing cited in some analyses has not been confirmed in official Greek statements.
Maritime Security
Hormuz: Turkish Vessels Receiving Passage
Iran is selectively permitting vessels linked to China, Türkiye, Pakistan and India to transit the Strait of Hormuz. A Turkish-owned vessel received passage after calling at an Iranian port. Fourteen additional Turkish-owned vessels remain in the region awaiting clearance. The selective access arrangement reflects Iran's use of the strait as a diplomatic instrument rather than a military one.
French Navy Boards Shadow Fleet Vessels
The French Navy conducted helicopter-led boarding operations in the western and central Mediterranean on 20 March, targeting vessels suspected of operating as part of Russia's shadow fleet. The operations reflect the convergence of sanctions enforcement, environmental monitoring and maritime security in a basin already under significant military pressure.
Cape of Good Hope Rerouting / Freight Rates
Major carriers including MSC and Hapag-Lloyd have moved Asia-Europe traffic permanently to the Cape of Good Hope route. Freight rates to the Mediterranean have surged to $4,500-$5,200 per FEU. Emergency conflict surcharges are now standard across the industry. Egypt's energy import bill has more than doubled as global prices surged, illustrating how non-combatant Eastern Mediterranean states are absorbing the fiscal cost of the Gulf crisis.
Diplomacy
European Council: Cyprus, Hormuz, British Bases
The European Council published its conclusions on 19 March following the Brussels summit. EU leaders formally welcomed the deployment of member state military assets in the Eastern Mediterranean in support of Cyprus, condemned any acts threatening navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and called for EUNAVFOR ASPIDES and ATALANTA to be reinforced. The conclusions acknowledged Cyprus's intention to open talks with the UK over the future of the British bases, with the EU stating it stands ready to assist. The moratorium on strikes against energy and water infrastructure was added to the final text, not present in pre-summit drafts. Europe and Japan separately announced coordinated efforts to secure freedom of navigation through Hormuz once conditions allow.
Greece: No to Hormuz Combat Mission, Yes to Aspides
Athens confirmed it will not join military operations in the Strait of Hormuz, drawing a clear line between defensive maritime security and direct participation in Gulf combat operations. Greece continues its contribution to EUNAVFOR ASPIDES and has called for an internationally coordinated solution to protect navigation. With Greek shipping among the most exposed in the world, the distinction between Aspides and a Hormuz escort mission carries direct economic weight.
Türkiye Signs Riyadh Statement: A Costly Text at Home
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan signed a twelve-nation joint statement in Riyadh on 18-19 March condemning Iran's regional strikes. The document made no mention of the US-Israeli offensive launched on 28 February. Erdoğan had described those strikes as a "clear violation of international law" on 2 March. Fidan had told the AP on 14 March that Iran felt "betrayed" because it was attacked while in active negotiations with Washington. The gap between those statements and the Riyadh text drew sharp criticism in Türkiye. The meeting itself came under an Iranian strike alert, with ministers directed to shelters as the document was being finalised. Full report: Türkiye Signs Riyadh Statement.
Mitsotakis: No Apologies on Evros, No Negotiations on Karpathos
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis rejected allegations of migrant pushbacks at the Evros border after the European Council on 19 March, saying he had "no knowledge" of the claims and would "not apologize" for Greece's border policies. He also dismissed Türkiye's reported objections to the Patriot deployment on Karpathos as "legally unfounded," stating that Greece "does not negotiate with anyone the deployment of its defense forces at the operational level." Full report: Mitsotakis on Evros and Karpathos.
Greece-Cyprus-Israel Trilateral
Greece, Cyprus and Israel confirmed a joint defence action plan in late 2025 covering increased air and naval exercises in 2026, interoperability and intelligence sharing. Officials have explicitly linked the cooperation to stability and energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Energy and Infrastructure
Energean Suspends Israel Production Outlook
Energean has suspended its 2026 production guidance for its Israeli offshore assets following war-related shutdowns. The decision signals that Eastern Mediterranean gas is no longer simply a medium-term strategic question but an immediate operational disruption. Offshore blocks operated by TotalEnergies and Eni in Cyprus's exclusive economic zone remain active but exposed to the same risk environment.
Netanyahu Proposes Overland Energy Corridor to Mediterranean
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the Hormuz crisis demonstrates the need for a land-based energy corridor, proposing pipelines to carry Gulf oil and gas across the Arabian Peninsula to Israeli Mediterranean ports. The proposal, if pursued, would mark a significant reordering of Eastern Mediterranean energy logistics and positions Israel as a potential transit hub in a post-Hormuz supply architecture.
Türkiye: CANDU MoU, Eight Reactors, Multiple Partners
TÜNAŞ and Canada's AtkinsRéalis signed a memorandum of understanding on 4 March to assess CANDU reactor technology for deployment in Türkiye. The deal adds Canada to a nuclear partnership map that already includes Russia, South Korea, China and the IAEA. Türkiye is targeting eight new reactors at Sinop and Thrace, with Akkuyu's first unit on track to generate electricity in 2026. Full report: Türkiye Nuclear Expansion.
Israel-Lebanon Front
Zahrani Line: Israel Expands Evacuation Zone
Israel issued new evacuation warnings for villages south of the Zahrani River on 20 March, extending beyond its earlier warnings north of the Litani. The expansion marks another step in Israel's effort to establish a buffer zone stretching deep into southern Lebanon. The 91st, 98th and 146th Divisions remain engaged across the eastern and western sectors. Fighting around Khiam continues. Türkiye condemned the operation as one of Israel's "genocidal and collective punishment policies, this time in Lebanon," warning against another humanitarian catastrophe.
Over 1,000 Killed in Lebanon
Lebanon's death toll from the conflict has passed 1,000 since fighting resumed on 2 March, with at least 111 children among the dead. More than one million people have been displaced, 19 percent of the country's population. Hezbollah continues to fire an average of 100 rockets per day into northern Israel, sometimes coordinated with Iranian salvos.
***Casualty figures from Lebanon and Iran are drawn from local health authorities and international agencies. Israeli military claims are attributed as stated. NOTAM A0126/26 source is not officially attributed. Achilles Shield Karpathos-Cyprus umbrella framing is unconfirmed in official Greek statements. Independent verification of all figures remains incomplete.
