Military Posture

The United States struck more than 90 military targets on Iran's Kharg Island overnight Friday, the first attack on the small Persian Gulf island that handles roughly 90% of Iran's oil exports. CENTCOM confirmed the strikes destroyed naval mine storage facilities, missile storage bunkers, and other military sites while preserving oil infrastructure. "U.S. forces successfully struck more than 90 Iranian military targets on Kharg Island, while preserving the oil infrastructure," CENTCOM said on X on March 14. Trump announced the strikes on Truth Social late Friday: "Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran's crown jewel, Kharg Island." He added he had "chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island," threatening to reverse the decision if Iran continues blocking the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya military command threatened on Saturday to attack cities in the United Arab Emirates, claiming without evidence that the US launched Kharg strikes from UAE ports and facilities. It called on people to evacuate three major UAE port areas. Iran's IRGC separately declared the Strait of Hormuz "remains prohibited."

The Pentagon is deploying an additional 2,200 to 2,500 Marines to the Middle East via the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS Tripoli, currently based in Okinawa. The deployment does not confirm a ground operation is planned. A US Air Force KC-135 tanker crashed in Iraq on March 13, killing all six crew members on board.

Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz said Saturday the war with Iran is entering a "decisive phase." The Israeli military issued an evacuation warning for an industrial zone west of Iran's Tabriz, signalling further strikes.

France's carrier strike group, comprising the Charles de Gaulle, eight frigates, and two Mistral-class amphibious helicopter carriers, is now fully deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean, representing roughly half of France's major surface combatants. Macron boarded the carrier off Cyprus on March 9 and described the mobilisation as unprecedented.

Air and Missile Defence

No new Iranian ballistic missile interceptions over Turkish territory were recorded on March 14. The last interception occurred on March 13 over Gaziantep, the third such incident in two weeks.

Residents in Adana reported hearing sirens and a loud explosion near Incirlik Air Base in the early hours of March 13, following the third NATO interception. No official confirmation that Incirlik was directly targeted. Missile debris fell approximately 150 kilometres from the base, per AP reporting and social media fact-checks.

Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi posted a message on X in Turkish on March 14 praising Türkiye's solidarity with Iran during the conflict. "During these blessed days of Ramadan, the prayers and solidarity shown by the brotherly Turkish nation and the friendly Republic of Türkiye for the Iranian people are a great source of strength and morale for us," he said. The decision to post in Turkish rather than Persian or English was noted as deliberate.

Maritime Security

Following the Kharg Island strikes, Iran's IRGC reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed to Western-linked commercial traffic. Smoke was reported near Fujairah following new strikes on energy-adjacent infrastructure. Oil export operations on Kharg Island were reported as normal by Ehsan Jahaniyan, deputy governor of Bushehr province, citing IRNA: "Export and import operations, as well as the activities of companies based on the island, are currently ongoing."

Trump on Saturday called on China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the UK to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz. He also said US Navy escorts for commercial tankers through the strait would begin "soon." A senior Iranian official told CNN that Tehran is considering allowing some vessels to transit, provided cargo is traded in Chinese yuan.

Fourteen Turkish-owned vessels remain stranded near the Strait of Hormuz with 171 Turkish personnel on board, unchanged from March 13.

Diplomacy

In a significant development on March 14, Israel and Lebanon are expected to hold direct talks in the coming days, Haaretz reported, citing two sources with knowledge of the matter. Jared Kushner will be involved. Netanyahu's confidant Ron Dermer will lead the Israeli delegation. Talks may be held in Paris or Cyprus. Cyprus confirmed its willingness to host but no date has been set. Macron on Saturday urged Israel to engage and offered Paris as a venue: "France is ready to facilitate these talks by hosting them in Paris," he said on X. Lebanon is insisting on a full cessation of hostilities before talks begin. Israel rejected the condition, saying talks must proceed while fighting continues.

Iranian President Pezeshkian has publicly stated terms for ending the Iran war: recognition of Iran's rights, payment of reparations, and international guarantees against future strikes. No new mediation breakthrough involving Türkiye, Oman, or Egypt was reported on March 14. Trump on Saturday said Iran "wants a deal" without providing evidence and told reporters the campaign would last "as long as necessary." A senior regional official told NPR that Israeli leaders increasingly believe the war will end unilaterally rather than through negotiation.

Energy and Infrastructure

Brent crude remained above $100 per barrel. The Kharg Island strikes introduced fresh uncertainty over oil infrastructure. Iran warned that any attack on Kharg oil facilities would lead to retaliatory strikes on US-linked regional energy installations. Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline diversion to Yanbu continues at elevated levels. MSC fuel surcharges covering the Eastern Mediterranean, Greece, and Türkiye take effect March 16. Cyprus confirmed in a Reuters interview published March 13 that it is targeting first gas exports by early 2028 via Egypt, presenting East Med supply as part of Europe's diversification push as regional transit risks intensify.

Israel-Lebanon Front

The agenda for the expected Israel-Lebanon talks is focused on ending fighting in Lebanon and the question of Hezbollah's disarmament. Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem said Friday his group was ready for a long confrontation and that any solution requires Israel to halt attacks, withdraw from Lebanese territory, and release prisoners.

Four people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on an apartment in Sidon on March 14. A health care centre in the village of Burj Qalaouiyah was struck on March 13, killing 12 people. Lebanon's cumulative toll since March 2 stands at 773 killed and 1,933 wounded, including 103 children, with over 800,000 displaced. UN Secretary-General Guterres held a press conference in Beirut on Saturday calling on all sides to halt fighting.
