Interior Ministry Probes Alleged Irregularities in Management of Turkish Cypriot Properties in Paphos
By Bosphorus News Staff
Authorities in Cyprus have launched an investigation into the management of Turkish Cypriot properties in Paphos following allegations of mismanagement and improper subleasing, according to multiple Greek and Cypriot media reports.
The probe, confirmed by the Ministry of Interior of Cyprus, centres on claims that a municipal property in the Mouttalos area was subleased to a private operator for commercial use before the required approvals were granted. The file has reportedly been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office of Cyprus for legal evaluation.
Under the custodial regime applied in the Greek-administered south after 1974, Turkish Cypriot properties are administered by the state and leased under specific legal procedures. Subleasing requires prior authorisation from the relevant authorities.
Local reporting indicates that the investigation follows complaints dating back to 2022 and forms part of a broader review of administrative practices within the Paphos Municipality. Police inquiries are examining whether legal guidance was followed and whether contractual obligations were breached.
Separate coverage suggests the Interior Ministry has initiated sample checks of Turkish Cypriot property contracts beyond Paphos, signalling a wider compliance review.
The mayor of Paphos, who has been suspended in connection with parallel investigations into alleged municipal irregularities, is expected to provide testimony as part of the ongoing process, according to local outlets.
No formal charges have been announced. Authorities state that investigations remain ongoing.
