The cabinet of the Republic of Cyprus has approved changes to the service framework of contract soldiers (SYOP) in the National Guard, extending the retirement age from 42 to 57 and raising the maximum recruitment age from 27 to 35.

President Nikos Christodoulides announced the decision following the cabinet meeting on February 18, stating that the measures are intended to strengthen staffing continuity within the force.

The new framework introduces an examination-based promotion track, allowing contract soldiers to advance up to the rank of Sergeant Major. Until now, SYOP personnel had limited promotion prospects beyond lower non-commissioned ranks.

Monthly allowances will also increase. Personnel serving in special units, including OYK frogmen, demining teams and military nurses, will receive €250 per month, up from €200. Other contract soldiers will receive €150 per month.

According to the presidency, the reforms are designed to improve retention and provide longer-term service prospects within the National Guard. Christodoulides linked the changes to the country’s improved economic performance, stating that fiscal conditions allow for targeted reinforcement of defence personnel.

Further implementation details are expected to be issued by the Ministry of Defence.
