Black Sea Tensions Escalate: Another Russian Vessel Attacked Off Turkey

The Black Sea has become a battleground for maritime aggression once again. On December 1, 2025, the Russian tanker MIDVOLGA-2 was attacked approximately 80 nautical miles off the coast of Türkiye while en route from Russia to Georgia carrying a cargo of sunflower oil. A statement from Türkiye’s Directorate General of Maritime Affairs confirmed the incident, noting that despite the attack, there were no casualties among the 13 crew members. The vessel managed to continue its journey and is currently sailing toward the Turkish port city of Sinop under its own power.

This latest attack adds to a series of assaults on commercial and tanker vessels in the strategic and geopolitically sensitive Black Sea region. Previously, the tanker VIRAT was also hit approximately 35 nautical miles from Türkiye waters, suffering damages but with all 20 crew members reported safe. Both vessels are related to Russian operations, reportedly transporting goods and fuel supplies critical amid ongoing regional tensions.

Sources from Ukrainian media suggest that these attacks are linked to Ukrainian military operations targeting what they call "shadow fleets" used by Russia to circumvent international sanctions. Drones are reported to be employed in these sabotage missions, signaling a shift toward new maritime warfare tactics that threaten shipping security in one of Europe's key waterways.

The attacks underline the precarious nature of commercial shipping in the Black Sea as geopolitical struggles continue to disrupt the region’s maritime routes. Turkish authorities are closely monitoring the situation, coordinating rescue and security operations to ensure the safety of vessels traversing these contested waters.

This event also raises concerns about the broader implications for global maritime trade, energy security, and regional stability, as disruptions at sea can ripple through international markets and diplomatic relations.

Türkiye condemned these attacks as a threat to maritime safety and stability in the Black Sea region.
