Football Betting Probe Deepens as Nine Officials Face Discipline
The Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu (TFF) has announced that nine referees who served within its ranks over the past five years have been referred to disciplinary proceedings after being found to have placed bets on football matches, a serious violation of federation rules.
Among those referred is Ali Palabıyık, a former Süper Lig referee.
The referees have been sent to the Profesyonel Futbol Disiplin Kurulu (PFDK) — the Professional Football Disciplinary Board, the TFF’s independent body responsible for investigating disciplinary breaches and imposing sanctions within professional football in Türkiye.
Full TFF Statement
In its official announcement, the federation used the following wording:
“As part of the betting investigation conducted by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), it has been decided that the individuals listed below, who have served as referees within the TFF over the past five years and have been found to have placed bets on football matches, shall be provisionally referred to the Professional Football Disciplinary Committee (PFDK) effective December 26, 2025, in accordance with Article 57 of the Football Disciplinary Regulations.”
The statement confirms that the referees were provisionally referred to the disciplinary board as of 26 December 2025, pending the outcome of formal proceedings.
A Wider, Multi-Layered Investigation
The referees’ cases form part of a broader betting investigation currently unfolding in Turkish football. In parallel, state prosecutors are conducting a separate criminal inquiry, which has already resulted in the detention of club presidents and professional players, according to publicly available information.
While the TFF’s disciplinary process and the judicial investigation are legally distinct, officials stress that they are being carried out in close coordination, ensuring that sporting sanctions and criminal proceedings proceed without overlap or procedural conflict.

International Oversight Expected
Given the scale of the case, UEFA and FIFA are expected to monitor developments closely and may become formally involved should the findings trigger cross-border or international regulatory concerns. Such oversight is standard practice in cases involving potential threats to the integrity of competition.
Disciplinary Framework
Under Article 57 of the Football Disciplinary Code, betting on football by referees or officials constitutes one of the most serious violations. Possible sanctions include long-term suspensions or permanent bans from football-related activities, depending on the circumstances of each case.
Background: Integrity and Governance
Betting offenses are treated as a strict red line in both Turkish and international football governance. Referees, players, and club officials are all subject to enhanced scrutiny due to their potential influence on match outcomes and public trust.
In recent years, Turkish football authorities have aligned more closely with international integrity standards, expanding monitoring systems and compliance mechanisms in cooperation with global governing bodies.
What Comes Next
The PFDK will now assess each case individually and issue decisions based on disciplinary evidence, while the criminal investigation continues under judicial authority. Until final rulings are delivered, the referees involved remain under precautionary suspension.
For the TFF, the message is explicit: betting violations will be pursued at every level, with domestic and international scrutiny reinforcing efforts to safeguard the credibility of Turkish football.
